SDG 3 : GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Mahidol University is a leading institution in the health sciences, renowned for its medical research programs and innovative treatments. The university actively shares health knowledge with both Thai and international communities. Each year, Mahidol produces a large number of medical graduates, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals. The university also operates six hospitals, six medical centers, and one medical institute, providing comprehensive healthcare services for a wide range of diseases. These efforts help reduce healthcare disparities and enhance equitable access to medical services for all.
Beyond medical treatment, Mahidol University houses several specialized research centers, such as the Stroke Center, Dialysis Center, and Cancer Center, which contribute to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. The university also plays a key role in promoting public health through various initiatives and community-based projects that encourage healthy living at both local and national levels.
Mahidol organizes numerous health education activities, including live educational programs on AIDS awareness during World AIDS Day, World Cancer Week events, Obesity Awareness Day, and exercise promotion campaigns to encourage proper physical activity.
In addition, the university provides mental health counseling services for students and the general public, as well as a Teen Clinic that offers guidance to adolescents on issues such as drug addiction and sexual health. To promote overall well-being, Mahidol offers fitness facilities and sports fields for students and staff. The university is also a smoke-free campus, continuously campaigning to raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking and encouraging people to quit for better health.
At the ASEAN level, Mahidol University serves as a leader in health promotion, acting as a knowledge hub and model institution within the ASEAN University Network – Health Promotion Network (AUN–HPN). Its excellence in health promotion and sustainable well-being has been recognized internationally, earning 5 Stars in the HURS 2024 rating.

Mahidol University has a variety of specialized disease centers, such as a Cancer Centers, Stroke Center and Kidney Center.
The Ramathibodi Comprehensive Tumor Biobank
The Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University has established the Ramathibodi Comprehensive Tumor Biobank under the Cancer Center of Excellence, in collaboration with the Translational Medicine Group and the Health Science Research Office. The biobank serves as a systematic repository for clinical samples and biological data from cancer patients to support in-depth, multidisciplinary research at the molecular level. By providing a reliable source of high-quality clinical samples, it facilitates multi-institutional collaboration, fosters innovation in cancer diagnostics and treatment, and advances the development of precision medicine. Ultimately, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign technology, lessen the nation’s economic burden, enhance treatment success rates, and improve the quality of life for both current and future cancer patients.
Siriraj Cancer Center
The Siriraj Cancer Center, established in 1945, is a specialized center under the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University—Thailand’s oldest medical institution. Located in Bangkok, the center serves as a leading hub for cancer education, research, treatment, and prevention, providing comprehensive and multidisciplinary care for a wide range of cancers. Its mission is to coordinate and deliver high-quality, up-to-date cancer services, promote cutting-edge research, and lead society with academically recognized knowledge in oncology. Equipped with advanced technologies such as MR LINAC for precision radiotherapy, the Siriraj Cancer Center not only offers world-class clinical services but also fosters innovation and collaboration in cancer research and education to improve patient outcomes and strengthen cancer prevention efforts.
The Tumor Clinic at the Siriraj Cancer Center was established to coordinate collaboration among physicians and medical personnel specializing in oncology. Its mission encompasses education, research, treatment, prevention, and the dissemination of accurate and up-to-date information related to cancer care.
The Siriraj Cancer Center provides the Tumor Clinic service, which focuses on treatment planning for cancer patients. The clinic operates every Thursday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, where a multidisciplinary team of medical specialists—including oncologists (chemotherapy) and radiation oncologists—convene to discuss and plan individualized treatment strategies. Patients referred to the Tumor Clinic typically have complex cancer conditions that require careful evaluation to determine the most effective treatment approach for optimal outcomes.
In 1969, the Academic Committee of the Siriraj Cancer Institute initiated a project to compile comprehensive cancer statistics for Siriraj Hospital. The goal was to collect data on all cancer patients, both inpatients and outpatients, to establish a complete record of cancer cases within the hospital. This information would serve as a valuable resource for physicians conducting research and epidemiological studies, as well as for comparison with international cancer statistics.
As a result, the Cancer Statistics Unit of the Siriraj Cancer Institute was established, and the first Tumor Registry was published in 1969, using terminology and classification based on the World Health Organization (WHO) – ICD Coding for Injuries and Causes of Death, 7th Edition. In 2010, the registry was made available online through the Siriraj Cancer Center’s website. From 1969 to 2008, cancer data were collected using a stand-alone system, which included D-Base and FoxPro platforms. In 2009, the system was upgraded to a web-based application, developed using ASP.NET (C#) and a SQL Server database, which continues to be used to the present day.
Stroke as a Major Health Problem
Stroke is a major global health concern due to its high prevalence and disability rate. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 15 million people suffer from stroke each year. One-third of these patients die, accounting for about 10% of all deaths worldwide, while most survivors live with chronic disabilities. In Thailand, the prevalence of stroke is 1.88 per 100 individuals aged 45–80 years. A nationwide study involving over 1,000 patients from multiple institutions revealed that, upon hospital discharge, around 5% of stroke patients had died and 70% were left with disabilities. Based on the Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) index, stroke ranks as the leading cause of disease burden among women and the fourth among men. This burden is expected to rise due to the country’s aging population. A 10-year retrospective study (2004–2013) at Siriraj Hospital showed that the number of hospitalized stroke patients ranged from 800 to 1,100 per year, increasing from 759 cases in 2006 to 1,073 in 2012. About 60% of these patients were treated in the stroke unit, while the remaining 40% were distributed across other wards, leading to variations in care quality and a lack of consistent coordination among departments involved in stroke management.
Development of Comprehensive Stroke Care
Achieving excellence in stroke care requires collaboration among multiple departments and disciplines. The process begins with acute stroke screening, initial assessment in the emergency room, urgent brain imaging and blood tests, and immediate consultation with on-call neurologists to determine eligibility for intravenous thrombolytic therapy (t-PA). For eligible patients, interventional neuroradiologists perform mechanical thrombectomy to remove the clot. Patients are then admitted to the acute stroke unit for specialized care, followed by in-hospital rehabilitation, further investigations to identify the cause, and secondary prevention planning. Discharge planning includes medication counseling, nutritional guidance, and patient education for home care and long-term follow-up. Each step requires seamless coordination among all involved units to ensure efficient and comprehensive care.
Advancement and the Establishment of the Siriraj Stroke Center
With rapid advancements in stroke diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, coupled with increasing patient numbers and limited resources, many complex cases exceed the capacity of general hospitals and require referral to tertiary care centers. The establishment of the Siriraj Stroke Center addresses these challenges by coordinating multidisciplinary teams to enhance efficiency and quality of care. The center focuses on developing an acute stroke fast-track system, improving acute patient transfer protocols, enhancing overall care quality, and building a referral network. It also promotes community outreach programs for stroke prevention and awareness, and advances specialized research to achieve excellence in stroke care, education, and research—both nationally and across Southeast Asia.
The Mobile Stroke Unit
The Siriraj Stroke Center, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, has initiated the Mobile Stroke Unit connected with TeleConsultation and Patient Transfer System — A One-Stop Service for All (MSU-SOS: Mobile Stroke Unit, Stroke One Stop) project. This project aims to provide an integrated, comprehensive stroke care system that combines mobile emergency stroke services with teleconsultation and coordinated patient transfer, ensuring timely and effective treatment for everyone.
Mobile Stroke Unit Stroke One Stop (MSU-SOS)

3.3.7 Mental health support for staff
Mahidol University places great importance on the mental health of both students and staff. Therefore, Mahidol University provides mental health counseling services both during work hours and after work hours. Details of Mahidol Friends (MU Friends) : Counseling service are as follows:
Office Hours
- Mahidol students and staff can receive counseling service at Salaya / Phayathai every day.
* Mahidol students and staff can book an appointment for consultation.
5 - 7 P.M. (After work hours)
- Thai students and staff can receive counseling services every Tuesday and Thursday.
- International students can receive counseling services every Tuesday.
Mahidol University has introduced two key initiatives to support mental well-being within its community. The first, the Personnel Mindfulness Center Project (MU MIND) , promotes staff mental health through an online platform accessible via the “OOCA” application, offering counseling and support related to burnout, stress management, workplace conflict, and general mental health.
“OOCA” is an online psychiatrist consultation platform that allows students and staff to talk about their problems with psychiatrists and psychologists via video call. It can be accessed privately and securely from your computer or mobile phone at any time and from anywhere. Another avenue for collaboration is the “Wall of Sharing” project, which aims to improve children’s mental health.
The second initiative, MU MyMind , is a mental health promotion website designed for students, staff, and the general public. It provides reliable basic mental health assessments, promotes self-care practices, and offers easy-to-access healing activities. It invites everyone to take care of their mental health through a simple 5-step program that helps build calmness, stability, and self-awareness. Developed by a research team from the Department of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, Mahidol University, the program is grounded in real-world research and takes about 12 days to complete. Participants who finish all five steps often experience greater mindfulness and better stress management. Supported by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) from 2019–2020, research confirmed that the program effectively reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, with lasting improvements observed even after 3 and 6 months.
