Lecturer Workshop on Teaching Human Rights

Since 2017, the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University, as a convener of the Human Rights Education theme of the ASEAN University Network (AUN-HRE), and the SHAPE-SEA Program have been co-organizing annual Regional Lecturer Workshops for university lecturers from ASEAN countries with an aim to strengthen knowledge and capacity for academics and government personnel in international human rights laws. The training workshops cover key human rights treaties including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Other key human rights laws and issues discussed include women’s rights, gender and sexuality, child rights, migration and trafficking; peace and conflict as well as human rights protection in Southeast Asia. The training workshops also aim to equip participants with pedagogical practices that would enhance teaching skills for lecturers.  This year (2021), the workshop focuses on peace education.

Around 125 lecturers and government personnel from the 9 ASEAN countries participated in the workshops so far. The knowledge and skills gained by these academics is significant in contributing to strengthening human rights, peace and the rule of law in the region.
